Secondary Mathematics Education

Master of Education

The master of education (MEd) is a professional degree signifying advanced knowledge about and advanced training in educational practice. This cohort program, leading to the MEd degree in the teaching of secondary school mathematics, is offered jointly by the Faculty of Education and the Department of Mathematics.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must satisfy the University admission requirements as stated in Graduate General Regulations 1.3 in the SFU Calendar. In exceptional circumstances, applicants who do not meet these requirements may be considered if superior scholarly or professional achievement is demonstrated.

Admission is granted to a specific degree and to a particular program or specialization. Application information is available from the Faculty of Education.

Program Requirements

This program consists of courses and a comprehensive examination for a minimum of 35 units.

Students must complete

EDUC 844 - Issues in Mathematics Education (5)

An examination of critical issues, current research, and practices in mathematics education.

EDUC 845 - Learning Mathematics with Computers (5)

Experience in incorporating computers in mathematical problem solving, adaptation of materials for use in mathematics classroom.

EDUC 846 - Foundations of Mathematics Education (5)

An examination of historical, cultural, and psychological forces shaping the secondary school mathematics curriculum. Current developments in mathematics curriculum and in mathematics education research.

EDUC 847 - Teaching and Learning Mathematics (5)

The theory and practice of mathematics teaching at the secondary level. Emphasis on the nature of the learner and the function of the teacher.

MATH 603 - Foundations of Mathematics (4)

Crises in mathematics, their historical and philosophical background and their resolution. Prerequisite: Acceptance into the MSc program in mathematics education or permission of the department. Graduate students in the Department of Mathematics cannot take this course to satisfy their degree requirements.

MATH 604 - Geometry (4)

Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometries. Klein's erlangen program. Prerequisite: Entrance into the MSc in mathematics education program or permission of the department. Graduate students in the Department of Mathematics cannot take this course to satisfy their degree requirements.

The examination is graded on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis.

The comprehensive examination normally occurs in the term in which course requirements are completed or in the immediately following term.

Program Length

Students are expected to complete the program requirements within six terms.
