The carnivorous shrieking birds were over the heart of Madrid. Then all at once, the sound of rhythmic dry thuds echoed cro! - cro! - cro! nine times ... The clouds of smoke scattered. I strained my ear. I wanted to hear the cried of pain that must be coming from Madrid.
But then from behind Madrid we heard a heavy metallic sound ... We heard sharp crackle of machine guns ... we heard a cry of horror near us. A bomber had crashed. I was turning over and over with a fearful racket.
