Yarns were told, songs were sung and stories exchanged and when all became quiet, the bush noises could be heard - crickets, dragon flies, bird calls and pods bursting open after the heat of the day on the bushes nearby. These with the booming of the southern ocean lulled us to sleep.

CIRCUMSTANCE: The writer is describing her experiences an a child living on the boorong, a 90 mile sand bar at the mouth of the Murray River, one side quiet waters, the other the Southern Ocean.
