REEL 41 COMMENTARY
1. Talk about this foghorn, and old foghorn, with foghorn going throughout. Explanation to lighthouse keeper about purpose of recording these sounds (3'45"). Lighthouse keeper comments on this new horn and hates it, and talks about old ones.2. Ocean rockwash. (Channels reversed). Waves have a distinctive rhythm, and create a foreground gurgle among the rocks. Take gives good sense of distance with background roar of ocean and foreground gurgle.
3. Hilarious! Lighthouse keeper talks about 3 African geese in the crowd (1'30") that have different calls. Quieter after 2 minutes. Disappear into the distance (2'30"), a few left in foreground.
4. 1 horse, on highway; a gravel crusher fairly far in background.
5. 1 ring.
6. 2 rings, entering through door. 2 more rings at other door.
7. Quiet rain and wind ambience, one bird calling in background.
8. Recorded from downtown, 6 blocks from mill with traffic ambience. Shift whistle (0'45") sounds very distant.
9. Only two rings. Useless.
10. Recorded from across the street, whistle (1'05") blast very short. It's amazing that there are not more sounds from the mill.
11. Shift whistle (45") goes off just as windshield wipers -- which make a lot of noise -- are turned off! Short blast from fire hall (56"). It's raining outside. Recording made from car. This is taken in a residential area. Cars passing regularly throughout. A dog barking in the distance occasionally: Kids running (5'15") and bells from two different churches ringing 12 noon in distance. Kid with squeaky bike (6'00"). Take stops before bells have ended.
