The classification of sounds according to form and function. For instance, sounds may be classified according to their origin (natural, human, man-made), their function in the SOUNDSCAPE (e.g., SOUND SIGNAL, KEYNOTE, SOUNDMARK), or their context (for instance, with speech sounds, the contexts of interview, story-telling, conversation, recitation, etc.).
