ATTENUATION
Acoustics / Electroacoustics Reduction in magnitude of a physical quantity such as sound, either by electronic means (e.g. a FADER, ATTENUATOR or POTENTIOMETER on a mixer, or the volume control adjustment of an AMPLIFIER), or by a physical barrier, including various absorptive materials (see ABSORPTION COEFFICIENT). Attenuation is usually measured in DECIBELs. See also: FILTER.
Compare: ABSORPTION, AMPLIFICATION, COMPRESSION, DAMPING, FADE, GAIN, RESONANCE, SOUND INSULATION.
