EXPERIMENT No. 5
Masking
Test 1. Upward Masking
Lower
and higher tones masking each other (Note: you may want to use headphones for these tests) |
A masking tone alternates (4
times) with a test tone decreasing in 10 steps.
Count how many steps you can hear with the test
tone.
There are two cases: A) the masking tone is 1200 Hz and the test tone is 2000 Hz; B) the masking tone is 2000 Hz and the test tone is 1200 Hz. Answer here. |
Test 2. Backward Masking
Backward masking of a tone by
noise |
A test
tone (2 kHz) heard first alone is then
followed by a brief time gap and then a
noise burst (in a similar frequency range).
The test tone decreases in 10 steps. Count
how many steps you can hear.
The ramp is heard three times: A) the time gap is 100 ms; B) the time gap is 20 ms; C) the time gap is 0 ms. Answer here. |
Test 3. Forward Masking
Forward masking of a tone by noise |
A test
tone (2 kHz) is preceded by a brief time gap
which is also preceded by a noise burst (in
a similar frequency range). The test tone
decreases in 10 steps. Count how many steps
you can hear with the test tone.
The ramp is heard three times: A) the time gap is 100 ms; B) the time gap is 20 ms; C) the time gap is 0 ms. Answer here. |
