B.A. in Sociology, minor in Indigenous Studies | Certificate in Social Justice

How did you decide to pursue a degree in SA? What interested you most about it?
I decided to pursue a degree in SA after my second semester at SFU. I took SA 150: Introduction to Sociology with Maureen Kihika and that course completely opened my eyes to the world of sociology. Sociology has been a study that has completely challenged my perception of the world we live in; it has truly allowed me to navigate life in such a different way. I find that sociology is an underappreciated concentration for those outside of this faculty. Often, when I tell people I studied sociology, many do not know what it is. However, I could not be more grateful for everything I have learned throughout this degree. Ultimately, everything I learned throughout this SA degree was extremely interesting and important.

What was your favourite SA course? Why?
My favourite SA course was SA 442, a special topics seminar with Nicholas Scott, that focused on "The Death of Human Supremacism". The course was unlike anything I could have expected, which speaks to the essence of studying sociology. It required me to think outside the box and look at society, and even life, from the perspective of all other living beings.

What’s something you’re proud of accomplishing during your time at SFU?
I was one of the countless students who, unfortunately, had the majority of their undergraduate journey throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. While it was quite an experience learning to navigate post-secondary education online, I am very proud that I persevered through the many difficulties that came along. I struggled academically during my first semester of university, but I completed the last semester of my undergraduate degree on the Honour Roll, which I am very happy about!

What are your plans post graduation?
My post-grad plans are, firstly, to travel! I would love to explore the world outside of my little bubble of university. I have a great passion for music and already have a trip planned to the Montreal Jazz Festival in June! My long-term goal is to become a high school teacher one day. I hope to apply to the PDP at SFU within the next year!
