Bachelor of Arts in Sociology | Certificate in Social Justice

How did you decide to pursue a degree in sociology? What interested you most about it?
I decided to do a degree in Sociology because I was always interested in societies and social groups. Doing a degree in Sociology allowed me to look into social norms and structural inequalities. Through this education, I can apply this to my career now as one of the roles in my job is to work with customer/employee support, where I address issues of diversity and responsibilities that companies need to have in creating equal and enjoyable work environments.

What was your favourite SA course? Why?
My favourite SA course was SA 335 - Gender Relations and Social Issues because I was able to learn about many different perspectives not only through the readings but also through my classmate's experiences. This course was very interactive, allowing me to learn about how gender plays such an important role in people's lives. We looked into life expectations that were set on individuals because of gender, and my favourite topic was gender and how it affected economics. I loved the discussion of gender disparities and how they can impact economic outcomes for individuals, such as looking into gendered education opportunities.

What’s something you’re proud of accomplishing during your time at SFU?
I am very proud to have completed my Sociology degree and made sure that I volunteered throughout my degree. I tried my best to volunteer and work in different places so that I knew what I wanted to do after I completed my Bachelor's. Many students enter university with a plan and want to do their best to follow it. I was exactly like that, but once I realized that instead of sticking to a plan and being scared, I needed to push myself to do what I liked, resulting in me being much happier.

What are your plans post grad/what are you up to now?
I am currently at BCIT for my postgraduate diploma in Accounting. I work for a company where I work as a designer and in customer support. I am using my degree to follow my passion for helping people and businesses, and I am so happy with my decision to complete my Bachelor's in Sociology at SFU.
