Paragraphs

All Things Donuts aims to explore the best Donut Shops in Vancouver! Our blog started with two university students living in Vancouver that enjoys visiting sweet shops and cafes during the weekends, especially donuts. They would occasioanlly post reviews that attracted a number of following. Now All Things Donuts is a community of individuals around Vancouver that share the same passion as us. Every month our donut experts will visit various local and franchise Donut shops around the city and rank them based on taste, price and presentation. Additionally, individuals can submit any new places that have yet to be reviewed and our experts will go try it out!

The history of the donut itself is generally traced to Dutch immigrants in 17th- and 18th-century New York, then New Netherland, who prepared fried dough balls called olie koeken or olykoeks, which means “oil cakes.” They were similar to modern donuts, although they did not yet have the iconic ring shape. Instead, the dough balls were stuffed with fruits and nuts in the middle. About 1850 an American sailor named Hanson Gregory is said to have innovated the iconic donut shape by piercing or cutting a hole through the centre of the treat. With the hole, donuts could be larger in size and still cook fully without leaving a doughy centre or requiring the addition of nuts or other fillings.
