MACKENZIE SCHOLZ

writer, author, editor

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

My name is Mackenzie Scholz, and I am a writer and editor. The modes of writing I participate in are technical academic and creative narrative. While imagery is my favourite to write in narratives, I appreciate the structure of academic papers. The two ends of the genre-spectrum allow me to compare the differences in how I apply writing theory in different circumstances. This compare and contrast of theory helps my reflective practice: going back, seeing what works, and what doesn't. While studying design, I found that the iterative process for visual mediums translates well to iterative editing for writing too.

INTRODUCTION

The theme I chose was 'Race and Gender as systems of exclusion or liberation under capitalism'. My topic was regarding the shift into Modernism at the turn of the 20th century and how all the new technology made it easier for women to express their gender identity. Gender theory always interested me and the in-class reading only enabled that. By combining academic research with personal insights all through a clear writing style, I ensured the content was both accessible and enlightening while still personable.

TECHNIQUE

Technical writing is very different from narrative writing. Over iterations of this paper, I struggled with keeping my sentences short rather than running on, trying to articulate a complex idea. I realized through critique and reflection over my drafts that in order to be succinct, I need to understand myself what I was saying. It seems obvious, but my rambling came from trying to explain the idea without fully understanding what I was writing about. Spending more time reading and researching allowed me to understand the topic better, thus writing about it better.

CONTENT

The biggest challenge was narrowing the scope of my thesis. I wanted to give as much context and information as possible in my arguments. In some drafts I was writing only about gender as a power structure and how it changes, letting the topic of technology fall by the wayside completely. However, I realized that making the core arguments more simple allowed me to be more efficient in writing them. So, I narrowed my thesis for a more concise idea.
