Think & Iterate

Song: Backwards by Forrest.

The project goal is to create a music booklet that resonates the summer energy that this song gives out through careless energy and truly being happy in the present. The concept of the design approaches are representing the free spirit that the song is telling through the summer season. I want to capture the bubbly feeling I get from the song through typography and its movement, making it easier to play around with handwritten style. The overall song is about letting go of responsibilities and living in the moment. I decided to go for the ocean and beach theme since they are the first reminder to me when I think of summer. The idea of doing a top view with pool tools came from the expressive typography project for the cover that metaphorically expresses the flow of water as to how the song makes me feel.

During the brainstorming process, I play around with expressive typography. The main two paths I decided to work around were very bright colours or retro theme. I take the portion from the song that said: “[t]his that 82 degrees. Got the water to my knees. Out here swinging with the trees on the beach…” as the main theme for the cover for the music booklet. I capture the idea of the ocean with pool toys floating on the water. All the toys are far apart, but their placements are easier for the audience to read the song's name.

After making the first draft, I realized that the name of the artist did not fit with the flow of the overall cover and was hard to read. The chosen colours and two-dimensional version were also not strong enough to pop the pool toys out.

For the final cover, I found a solid colour palettes for the project that communicates summer with bright colours and the ocean blue. I worked with the placement of the artist’s name to make it more cohesive and unite the cover design together. Lastly, I made pool toys look more three dimensional to make them really stand out comparing to the water pattern.

Bio

My name is Firm Kongthong, and I am a three-year student at Simon Fraser University, studying Interactive Arts and Technology. Since moving to Canada at the age of 15, I have learned to adapt my Thai culture with Western cultures to create my love of design and moving images. Growing up, I always saw design as a revolution to open the world up from constraints through colours, movements, rhythm, and inspirations from nature and one another. I believe that my piece will communicate the importance of self-identity while pushing the limits into the futuristic world.
