Introducing the ‘SFU Safe’ mobile app to enhance access to campus safety and security resources

October 15, 2024

Members of the university, including those living, working, or visiting any SFU site, can now easily access campus safety information and quickly connect with critical support services through the SFU Safe app.

Developed by Safety and Risk Services (SRS) and launched in October 2024, SFU Safe acts as a vital communication channel for delivering emergency notifications and critical event updates on campus, while offering users easier ways to access essential campus safety and security resources in one convenient app.

“We understand that incidents impacting the well-being, safety, and security of our community members can occur, often leaving them feeling overwhelmed and uncertain,” says Galib Bhayani, SRS’s chief safety and risk officer. “Our goal is to bridge this gap by streamlining the process, making it easier for individuals to connect with Campus Public Safety (CPS) and other emergency services when they face a critical event or need assistance on campus.”

With just a few clicks, users of the app can also call CPS for first aid, book a SafeWalk, use the FriendWalk feature to keep an eye out on a friend’s location when they are transiting alone, report incidents or hazards, learn about emergency procedures, connect with community support groups, check current weather and road conditions, and more.

“At SFU, safety is a shared responsibility. I encourage everyone part of our community, as well as those in our broader network, to embrace this new tool to strengthen our collective ability to create and maintain a safe campus environment for everyone,” says Bhayani.

“With this new safety-on-the-go resource, we aim to empower each university member to make informed decisions, take appropriate actions, and know that there are resources and support available to help ensure their safety and of others while on campus.”

SFU Safe is free and available to download  via the iOS/ Apple Store for iPhone or Google Play Store for Android devices. To learn more about SFU Safe, visit https://www.sfu.ca/srs/SFUSafe/.
