SAS Companion for the OS/390 Environment

Allocating OS/390 Generation Data Sets

An OS/390 generation data set (or generation) is a version of a data set that is stored as a member of a generation data group. (For detailed information about generation data groups, see your IBM documentation.) Both SAS data libraries and standard external files can be stored and managed as generation data groups. The methods of allocating and accessing generations are the same for SAS data libraries as they are for external files. For more information, see Allocating Generation Data Sets and Allocating a Multivolume Generation Data Group.

Note:   Do not confuse OS/390 generation data sets with SAS generation data sets. For more information on SAS generation data sets, see SAS Language Reference: Concepts.  [cautionend]
