A Scalar attribute uses the value of another attribute, factor, as well as the value it stores in its current value slot to compute the value to return upon a query. That is, when a Scalar attribute gets a request for its value, it first retrieves the value from some other attribute (factor) and then returns the product of this number and the number stored in its current value slot. A common use of this type of attribute is when an equipment model has an attribute named Length associated with it. For example, the transmission delay associated with a lightwave facility could be calculated using a Scalar attribute that stores a delay per kilometer value and uses it along with the value of the Length attribute to calculate the total transmission delay for the facility. In this case, the value of factor would be Length.
