The Query window may contain columns and tables that you selected the previous time that you used the Select window. To clear the window for selecting different tables or columns, select New from the File menu.

The data that is available to you from the Query window and that is presented in the Select window is based on which Query Manager has been chosen and how that Query Manager is set up, as described in the next section.

Selecting a Query Manager

A Query Manager controls access to your databases. Different Query Managers can be used to access different databases or different parts of the databases. For example, different Query Managers can be used to access different SAS libraries or different DB2 subsystems. A Query Manager defines a group of tables or views (SAS or DB2). The Query Manager maintains information such as the table and column names, indexes, column types, and relationships. The Query Manager also determines which tables, views, and columns you can use to build a query in the Select window.

By default, a personal SAS Query Manager, SASQM, is created the first time you enter the Query window. The default personal Query Manager uses all available SAS data libraries in the current SAS session except SASHELP and MAPS.

To choose a Query Manager, follow this path from the Query window to display a list of available Query Managers.

Select the Query Manager you want to choose. For this chapter, the SASQM Default SAS Query Manager is used. The list of Query Managers shows the Query Manager name, description, and type. The type of Query Manager can be M for Master, G for Group, or U for User. In the title of the Query window, the DBMS field shows the type of Query Manager in use, SAS or DB2, and the name of the Query Manager, for example, SASQM.
