SAS/ACCESS Software for PC File Formats: Reference

DBLOAD Naming Conventions

In Version 7 of SAS software, SAS data set names and variable names can be up to 32 characters in length. However, when you use the DBLOAD procedure to load a SAS data set into a PC file, the SAS variable names cannot exceed 8 characters. This restriction is applied in order to have compatibility with Version 6 naming conventions.
