Walk at Sasamat Lake/Woodhaven Swamp
Time: 10:00AM–12:30PM
The next SFURA walk is at Sasamat Lake/Woodhaven Swamp on Wednesday, February 3, 2010. We will meet in parking lot F at White Pine Beach at 10:00 a.m. Shirley and Ted Cohn will lead the walk.
Driving directions:
Go east on Barnett Highway (Highway 7A) or Clarke Road to St. Johns Street. Go east on St. Johns Street through Port Moody to Ioco Road, which is just east of Port Moody. Turn left (north) onto Ioco Road and drive northwest, following signs for Belcarra. Take Ioco Road almost to the end, and turn right on 1st Avenue in the community of Ioco. Then turn left at the next fork onto Bedwell Bay Road, and shortly after that turn right for White Pine Beach. We will meet in parking lot F at White Pine Beach at 10:00 a.m. If you have any trouble finding the place, you can reach us by cell phone on the morning of the walk at 778-868-3720.
EVEN BETTER, you can get detailed directions from your own starting point to White Pine Beach. Simply enter your address (House number, Street, City, and Postal Code) into Where's the Beach?.
The route we will walk:
We walk down to the main beach and turn right past the building at its north end, where the trail starts off into the trees on the lake's edge. Quite soon we go up to an access road on which we turn left to meet the approach to the Sasamat Outdoor Centre. After crossing the outlet by the Sasamat Centre, we turn right and follow Windermere Creek downstream for about 200 meters, then we rise to road level at the Belcarra Village welcome sign, where we take the crosswalk to a flight of stairs. We go up a trail between private properties, walk around the side of a bluff to a road directly across from Woodhaven swamp, and then walk around the swamp and return to Sasamat Lake. If we so decide, we can then walk around Sasamat Lake. On the route around the lake there is a floating bridge and several small feeder bridges, and a good view of the mountains.
The walk will take about 2 to 2½ hours. Although the walk has some hills, it is easy and is umbrella compatible. For those who want, we can stop somewhere for lunch after the walk.
If you have questions, you can email Bob Horsfall or David Ryeburn or Ted Cohn who organize these walks.
We would like to thank Norman Swartz for the excellent webpages he has set up for the walking group. We would also like to thank Jay and Carolyn Burr for the great birding walk they led last week on the West Vancouver seawall.
We encourage anyone who wants to lead a SFURA walk to contact us. (See above, "If you have questions...")
