Come join the SFU NATO Field School and SFU Public Square for a keynote speech on leadership and women in international security with Lt.-Gen. Chris Whitecross, Canada’s highest-ranking female officer and first female Commandant of the NATO Defense College, followed by a fireside chat with Senator Mobina Jaffer, deputy chair of the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence.
This event is presented in partnership with SFU’s Department of Political Science, SFU's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Simon Fraser Student Society, the Canadian International Council, the Canadian Association for Security and Intelligence Studies, and the SFU Model NATO Club.

Speakers
Lieutenant-General Chris Whitecross
Lt.-Gen. Whitecross is the first female commandant of the NATO Defense College and was recently named as a member of the G7 Advisory Council on Gender Equality. In 2011 and 2016 she was named one of Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women.
In 2015, Lt.-Gen. Whitecross led the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) Strategic Response Team on Sexual Misconduct, supporting Operation Honour, a CAF mission to eliminate harmful and inappropriate sexual behaviour in the Canadian military, and had a significant role in addressing the larger diversity issues with the CAF. Lt.-Gen. Whitecross is also a woman in STEM, educated as a chemical engineer. She has deployed with the UN in Yugoslavia and with NATO in Afghanistan.
Senator Mobina Jaffer
Senator Mobina Jaffer represents the province of British Columbia in the Senate of Canada, where she is deputy chair of the Standing Senate Committee on National Security and Defence. She is the first Muslim senator, the first African-born senator, and the first senator of South Asian descent.
Senator Jaffer served as Canada’s Special Envoy for Peace in Sudan from 2002 to 2006. From 2002 to 2005, she chaired the Canadian Committee on Women, Peace and Security. The Women’s Executive Network named Senator Jaffer among Canada’s Top 100 Most Powerful Women in 2003 and 2004.
