Happy holidays and thank you for another remarkable year!
As the Fall semester comes to a close and we all look forward to a well-deserved break, I want to thank our staff, faculty and students for their continued commitment to Simon Fraser University this past year.
Together, we boosted our performance and enhanced our reputation as ‘Canada’s Engaged University.’
SFU was again named Canada’s top comprehensive university in the Maclean’s ranking (for the 11th time in the past 12 years). Our research income surged to $161 million (up 60% over the past 7 years). Re$earch Infosource rated our research impact the best among Canada’s comprehensive universities. And a record eight SFU faculty members were named to the Royal Society of Canada.
In 2019, we strengthened our commitments to community engagement and advanced our efforts to support reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples.
On Burnaby mountain, a stunning new Student Union Building is nearing completion, construction of a stadium on Terry Fox Field is underway, and work has begun on over 850 units of new student housing and an expanded dining commons.
Our Vancouver campus celebrated its 30th anniversary as we prepare for the opening of our ninth downtown facility – a platform for community-engaged research and programming – at 312 Main.
At SFU Surrey, we opened a state-of-the-art building – home to our new Sustainable Energy Engineering program – and celebrated the Province’s commitment of $17 million to establish a Quantum Algorithms Institute.
We have much to be proud of, much to be thankful for, and much to look forward to!
I wish you a safe, relaxing and refreshing break over the holdiays with family and friends. And if you are looking for some uplifting seasonal entertainemnt, I strongly recommend SFU’s annual production of Bah Humbug! A contemporary adaptation of A Christmas Carol that combines leading professional performers with talented community actors from the Downtown Eastside, this much-loved musical is in the last of a ten-year run. You can catch the final performances at the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts until Dec. 21.
Happy holidays. I look forward to reconnecting with you, refreshed and re-engaged, in the New Year!
NOTE: This year’s holiday video greeting was prepared by University Communications with help from some special guests sharing some of their holiday wishes.
