During my co-op semester, I worked at the BC Ministry of Citizens’ Services (CITZ). CITZ main purpose is to provide key services to people in both urban and rural areas across British Columbia. My co-op placement was with the Policy and Legislation Branch (PAL) under the BC Data Services (BCDS) Division. BCDS leads data policy development and management, providing analysis, tools, training, and support, with a focus on implementing B.C.'s Anti-Racism Data Act (ARDA) and delivering the BC Data Plan.
I worked as a Policy Analyst for the Policy and Legislation team under the PAL branch. This team is responsible for the implementation of ARDA and delivery of the BC Data Plan which includes co-development commitments on Indigenous data sovereignty and a framework for using Indigenous languages when interacting with government.
During my work term, I focused on two major projects, expanding the public body definition and developing a racial identity data standard under ARDA. My tasks included conducting original research, performing a jurisdictional scan, and drafting policy memos and briefing notes. I provided updates and presentations to senior policy analysts, senior managers and the team director. Additionally, I assisted in creating a slide deck for the Anti-Racism Data Committee’s (ARdC) Community Event, which celebrated the ARdC report launch and provided updates on the 2024 release of statistics. I also helped host the event, which was attended by the Minister of Citizens’ Services and the Assistant Deputy Minister of BCDS. I also had the opportunity to draft a transition note for the new minister after the 2024 provincial election, outlining CITZ's responsibilities in implementing the Anti-Racism Data Act.
Through this co-op experience, I discovered my passion for anti-racism research and policy work, particularly in addressing racial inequities in the health and education sectors. With no previous policy work experience, I gained invaluable insights into my own strengths and developed greater confidence in my abilities. This experience has shown me that I can thrive in a policy environment, and I’m eager to apply what I've learned as I continue my academic journey. I’m excited about the possibility of returning to the BC public service after the program to further contribute to this important work!
