Physics 120 stuff

Please check here regularly as I will be posting (useful?) information regarding the course on this page.

Note that the subjects will be covered in this order: Mechanics, modern physics (nuclear physics, particle physics, cosmology).

We will cover the following chapters (not necessarily in this order): Mechanics- Ch. 1 - 14 (inclusive). Modern Physics- parts of Ch. 41 and 42 plus some extra material on particle physics and cosmology (if time permits). PLEASE NOTE: You will be tested on the topics covered in class (unless otherwise notified by me). We will not be covering all sections of the above chapters and you are therefore only responsible for the parts of the chapters covered in class (again, unless notified by me). This also means that if we cover anything in class which is not in the text, it is examinable material.

The marking scheme is as follows:

Scheme 1 2
Assignments 10% 10%
Term test(s) 35% 15%
Final exam 55% 75%

I will calculate your grade with both of the above marking schemes and give you the higher of the two marks. A very rough letter grade guide can be found here. Please note that this is from UBC and should only serve as a "ballpark" figure.

Assignments will consist usually of a mix of LON-CAPA problems and hand written problems. Due to budget constraints, not all of the hand-written problems may be marked. Please hand your assignments in either to the open lab TA's or the locked box labeled "Physics 120" in the hallway between the physics department and the AQ.

Non-programmable calculators are the only type allowed to be used in tests and exams (if at all, I havent decided yet). If you don't have one please try to borrow one or else, for about $9.00, you can buy one.

The final exam is on December 13th (Monday) from 8:30-11:30 in Images Theater (I think). The final exam will potentially cover every topic we have done in the course. It will primarily be based on the course notes (i.e. what we covered in class). There will be a mix of computational and descriptive problems. The formula sheets posted on the WEB site will be stapled to the front of your exam.

Regarding final exams: You must write the final during the scheduled time period. There can be no exceptions to this as all sorts of equity issues arise otherwise. If you miss the final due to a legitimate excuse (documented illness, in jail (provide arrest notice) etc) it is likely that you will have to write the final exam with the next 120 offering, either in April (if offered) or next December.

Please read the last paragraph again.
