Flyer E800 5004 dewires at Presidio and California Sts. turning from Presidio onto California on route 3 Jackson. This intersection is a 3/4 Grand Union (actually 10/12 since there are 12 possibilities at a Grand Union, and only 10 exist here). At the time of the photo, all the special work was K&M. K&M special work has never operated properly in San Francisco and Muni decided to slowly replace with Ohio Brass type overhead. On 13 AU 2001 at 6:15 a.m., a garbage truck with a cherry picker arm struck the wires at Presidio Avenue and California Street, cutting off electricity to the area and throwing live wires to the ground. This disrupted servce on routes 1, 3, and 4. Diesel buses were put into service, but there were not enough to cover all the runs. Muni had plans to replace this intersection with OB-type overhead and by Monday morning service was returned to trolleys though some turns were not installed until a day or so later. ETI articulated trolley 7125 on the 31 Balboa. This is interesting because Flyer artics were originally assigned to this line they were ADA, where as the Flyer E800 were not. This line had been served by ADA diesels. The line had to remain ADA. After the 40 foot ETIs went into service, they were assigned to the 31, since they are ADA. Lately, artics were once again seen on the 31. It is not known why. Photo by Peter Ehrlich. 6 FE 2004.

Twin Coach 570, the only one painted in red and cream. Next to it is 572. Note the rollsignThe 41 Union-Howard was the first trolleybus line installed by Muni in 1941 as Route R. It was combined with route E in 1947 and renumbered route 41. It was the first branch of a line to be truncated by Muni, when Howard St. was turned into a one-way street in the downtown area. This was supposed to be termporary as buses were used on the southern half. Wires were to be installed on Folsom for the return route. But this never happened. Photo by Art Curtis. Date unknown, but it must have been taken in the early 70s.
