Veselin Jungic (Math Catcher Program/Simon Fraser University) presented at the CARMA Colloqium, the University of Newcastle. The title of Veselin's presentation was "Two-Eyed Seeing: Indigenous Cultures and Mathematics."
Abstract: In this presentation, I will give an overview of the Ubiratan D'Ambrosio's concept of ethnomathematics and Elder Albert Marshal's concept of “two-eyed seeing.” I will address some of the dynamics between these two concepts and illustrate them with several examples that will include a brief analysis of geometry evident in a traditional Haida hat currently on display at the SFU Museum of Anthropology and the work of contemporary Salish artist Dylan Thomas.
