Milano to 1946 open link

This section of our Milan study focuses on the history of Milan from 300 AD up to 1946, researching important milestones from the city's past. We look at historic events such as the Risorgimento and several architectural structures including the Duomo di Milano, Teatro alla Scala and San Lorenzo, just to name a few.

The second week of our Milan studies focuses on Milan since the Miracle. We covered the history of Milan from 1946 to present. Some of the topics we covered include the Zona Tortona area, contemporary developments in Milanese architecture, the Stazione Centrale and personalities including Gae Aulenti and Gio Ponti.

During the 3rd week of our Milan studies, we looked into design and it's importance in Milan. We researched various key figures from Olivetti, Fiat + Piaggo, Lambretta and the scooters. Furthermore, we looked at the innovation in Milan, reading James Simmie's Innovative Cities and the Solid Side by Andrea Branzi. Design Factories are also important in our Milan studies, so investigated several studios including Kartell, Cassina, B&B Italia and Alessi. All of these design aspects helped us develop a better understand of Design in Milano.

Learning about the Masters of Italian Design is quite inspirational. In our last week of Milan studies, we focused on several influential Italian Designers including Andrea Branzi, Enzo Mari, Alessandro Mendini, and many more. We hope to learn from their design process and understand how they helped shape Italian Design.
