Nkmaplks Isnmamyatn Klsqilxw Cultural Immersion School, Vernon, BC
On May 2, 2012, the Math Catcher team, Jessica Humchitt, Alejandro Erickson, and Veselin Jungic visited Nkmaplks Isnmamyatn Klsqilxw Cultural Immersion School, Okanagan Indian Band, Vernon, B.C. Our hosts were teachers Ms. Marlene Johnston, Ms. Michelle Smith and Mr. Mario Richard.
A dozen students participated in the Math Catcher activities. They particularly enjoyed Jessica's stories about various traditions of Jessica's nation, the Heiltsuk First Nation.
Mr. Richard wrote the following about the Math Catcher visit: "Thank you for thinking of our school, when you were doing your math presentation. The kids from our school are still talking about your visit. The grade 4-7 teacher Ms. Smith told me that the students have more enthusiasm when they are doing math. You opened their minds, when you showed that math is all around us. Some students are thinking about what university they are going to go to. Hopefully you will be thinking of our school when you are in our area next time."
