Every
year Langley School District 35 hosts a "Read and Culture" program that runs during July for 16
days (Monday-Thursday). SD 35 has a partnership with Kwantlen First
Nation and they supply the program with leaders from intermediate grades, high
school, and post secondary and of course the Elders that teach the
culture. The program supplies the teacher and two Aboriginal Support
Workers and the place to host the Read and Culture Program, which is at
Fort Langley Elementary School.
The main focus of the program is literacy, however, the program organizers have noticed that many of the students have a "fear" of Math or have Math anxiety. This was one of the reasons that the "Read and Culture" program invited Math Catchers to meet with the program participants on July 4, 2013.
Veselin Jungic and Jamie Nordio met with two groups, Grades K-3 and Grades 4-7, of enthusiastic students who enjoyed talking mathematics, plating with math toys, and constructing tensegrities.
We are gratful to Ms. Janet Stromquist for her kind invitation and hospitality.
