Description: Sealaska Heritage Institute (SHI) is a regional Native nonprofit organization founded for perpetuation and enhancement of the cultures of the Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples of Southeast Alaska. SHI was established in 1981 by Sealaska Corporation—a corporation formed under the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA). SHI, which is governed by an all-Native Board of Trustees, administers cultural and educational programs, including a scholarship program for Native students, development of Native language documentation and revitalization programs, culturally-based curriculum development, support of Alaska Native arts, repatriation of Native cultural property, and other endeavors associated with Native cultural issues and concerns throughout our region.
