IPinCH Fellow: Jan 2013-Dec 2014
PhD Candidate, Department of Anthropology, University of British Columbia
An interest in the anthropology of photography, materiality, and cultural memory informs Adam Solomonian’s PhD research with the shíshálh Nation on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. His research seeks to contribute to a broader understanding of: (i) how Canadian Aboriginal communities are asserting self-determination in a globalized, post-colonial world through their visual and material culture; (ii) how new media technologies are combined with indigenous protocols to ensure the appropriate management of cultural heritage; and (iii) how visual archives and collections are produced and interpreted by Aboriginal communities as an active process of decolonization.
Adam is a doctoral student in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver. He also holds an MA in Anthropology from UBC and BA in Anthropology from Carleton University. His PhD committee consists of Dr. Jennifer Kramer (supervisor), Dr. John Barker, and Dr. Patrick Moore.
