  • December 8, 2010: Our working paper series, the Simons Papers in Security and Development, has published its 8th and 9th papers. John Harriss writes on decentralisation and delivery of social services in India, and Sebastian Merz writes on militias and security governance in Nigeria.

  • November 2, 2010: Congratulations to undergraduate students, Mitch Kelsey and Murad Javed on their victory at the 2010 CIC Inter-University Debate between SFU and UBC. The two topics of debate were: (1) human rights should be a major consideration indeveloping new economic agreements/relationships with othercountries; (2) the development of worldwide digital networks challenges the ability of governments to make balanced policy decisions.

  • April 19, 2010: Alvaro Pereira has won the ASPHS/Oliveira Marques Award for the best article published in 2009 in the field of Portuguese and Spanish history. His prize winning article is “The Opportunity of a Disaster: The Economic Impact of the 1755 Lisbon Earthquake,” The Journal of Economic History, (June 2009).
  • April 16, 2010: Read Nicole J. Jackson's new article, "The role of external factors in advancing non-liberal democratic forms of political rule; a case study of Russia's influence on Central Asian regimes" Contemporary Politics, vol.16, no1, March 2010.
  • April 1, 2010: Morten Jerven has been awarded a 3-year grant by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) for his project on African long-term development and the quality of growth statistics.
  • March 9, 2010: Jeff Checkel's 2009 book, European Identity (co-edited with Peter Katzenstein) was one of the 9 recommended by Foreign Affairs in its "What to Read" feature.
