To Speak With a Golden Voice

Bill Reid (1920-1998) was a pivotal force in Northwest Coast art who empowered and inspired a generation of artists. In honour of his 100th birthday, To Speak with a Golden Voice brings a fresh perspective to his legacy. Co-curated by Gwaai Edenshaw - considered to be Reid's last apprentice - and Beth Carter, this group exhibition includes rarely seen artworks from private collections and from the Gallery's core collection, works by contemporaries, including Robert Davidson and Beau Dick, and two new commissions by artist Cori Savard (Haida) and singer-songwriter Kinnie Starr (Dutch/German/Mohawk and Irish). Through a deep exploration of his voice, process, lineage, and heritage, this special anniversary exhibition traces the iconic Haida artist's lasting influence on Indigenous art and culture.
INDG 222: To Speak with a Golden Voice

In cooperation with the Bill Reid Gallery in Downtown Vancouver, the Department of Indigenous Studies at SFU is proud to offer a unique course that explores the life and legacy of Bill Reid. The course engages with and builds upon the exhibition by the same name celebrating 100 years since Bill Reid’s birth. The interdisciplinary course covers a wide range of topics relating to Indigenous cultural expressions and belongings explored through the lens of Bill Reid and his career. The offering will incorporate the authentic voices of Haida artists and community leaders through guest lectures, short documentary films, as well as the tangible and intangible cultural expressions on display in the exhibition itself.
As social distancing regulations continue to be in place, this course will be a remote offering with access to much of the content provided via video recording.
