FEATURED COURSES FOR SPRING 2022

This course is intended to be a basic survey of South Asian history designed to equip undergraduates with a foundation in the political, social and cultural history of South Asia from 1757 to 1947. We expect to move from a position of total unfamiliarity to a level of solid scholarly appreciation of the major historical events, themes and debates in modern South Asian history in one semester. This course’s survey approach and its wide range of themes will equip the dedicated student not only with academic knowledge but also writing, communication, analysis and critical skills.
The European Reformation brought about profound religious changes in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. What effect did these changes have on European culture and society? Does it make sense to think of several Reformations, or should historians view the Reformation as a coherent movement with a common agenda? Is the term “Counter-Reformation” an appropriate way of labeling Catholicism in the Reformation era? Was the Reformation a success or a failure?
What does it mean to live in a City? Urbanisation has played a key role in shaping modern society, culture and politics. We will consider the how and why of urban growth and development, the social and cultural life of cities, and the way different groups sought to shape the city in their image, or to carve out spaces of resistance. We will also pay particular attention to the unique history of the city we live in, addressing issues specific to Vancouver and its region, both past and present. In collaboration with CityStudio, students will develop a public history project that reflects on why knowing the history of where we live is essential in building more open and inclusive cities in the present and for the future.
