Crying in H Mart: A Memoir

Michelle Zauner

Alfred A. Knopf (2021)

The GSWS Feminist Book Club read Michelle Zauner’s Crying in H Mart - a heartbreaking memoir about the loss of her mother told through their shared love of Korean food. We all described the book as bold and raw, the depiction of love and grief so evident throughout. Most of us cried several times throughout the book, as it’s so relatable even if you haven’t experienced the exact situation, we’ve all experienced some sort of grief. We would have liked a bit more development on some of her other relationships and certain parts of the story, but also respect her author decision and right to share her story the way she wants. There were also moments of laughter where Michelle’s dry humour comes through, but it was strictly balanced with a discomfort around the nuanced relationship with her mother.
