Fledgling was a general pleasure for The GSWS Feminist Book Club. We had a big group discussing Octavia Butler’s last book. We liked the beginning more than the end and weren’t quite expecting this book to be about vampires but we all thought it was a fast and easy read. We were especially interested in the conversation about consent that this book arose and we liked how it framed non-monogamous relationships. Our discussion was very heavy on race and free will. We did however also think some of the characters lacked some development and a bit of an arc. We would have loved if it was possible to have a sequel, but unfortunately Butler passed before that could happen. RIP.
