Methodological and Operational Problem/Conclusion

The advantages of using Boolean Approach Method to predict possible landslide occurrence are:

  1. The most landslide susceptible area can be predicted very accurately.
  2. Huge cost saving can be made by accurately predicting the vulnerable sites
  3. The most suitable prevention plans can be effectively selected and executed on the highest priority areas.

Although very effective, since the Boolean Approach Method does not predict medium to low susceptive area as accurately as it does the high susceptive area, it is possible that some of the vulnerable potential landslide area can be neglected without adequate attention.  In order to compromise this, such methods like Weighted Linear Combination is necessary to predict medium to low susceptive area.

Predicting susceptive landslide site is the first step of preventing any disaster that might bring loss and casualties.  In addition to making accurate prediction, it is more important to come up with solutions to prevent and execute them.

In conclusion, in order to accurately and reliably predict landslide occurrence area, not only maps made using Weighted Linear Combination are needed but also maps made using Boolean Approach.  By carefully analyzing such maps, the municipality of Boun can predict susceptive area and take actions to prevent landslide.

There were some difficulties in doing the project.

First of all, since Boun is such a small municipality, it was extremely difficult to find extra information about the region other than the data I collected.  The information about amount of rainfall in the region (Chosun newspaper, Aug1998) was the only relevant information I could find and used.

Secondly, although I found land use map of the region with great difficulty, I could not utilize the data due to technical error.  With the data from the land use map, much more accurate assumption and prediction could have been made for such area like ¡°no tree¡± area.

Thirdly, due to my relatively little knowledge in the subject of geology and landslide, I believe it is possible that I have missed many factors that could resulted more reliable and accurate predictions.  For example, the relationship among landslide and drainage, slope, tree, and soil could be much more complex and detailed than what I have assumed in the project, and that could have resulted different prediction.

Fourth, projection was a problem throughout this project.  All data layers must have been converted to a common reference system, and it was hard to find the Korean specific reference system.
