2 Data Collection
2.1 Data Source
Data that I used for my project were acquired from the
department of Geography at Yonsei University, Korea. Although my originality is Korean
and my primary language is Korean, I found the data acquisition process very
challenging since I could not figure out who the right contact is, and I had to
make all contacts only through email.
It took a lot of time and energy to find the right contact person, and
through lab web page, I finally found that Dr. Kim
who had and eventually provided me the data I needed. I had to write a very long description of this project in
order to acquire the data because Dr. Kim had initially refused to send any
data out of the department of Geography at Yonsei University unless he
understands specifically what I was planning to do. It took me almost ten days to get his approval and access
code to search the data stored at the lab database. After acquiring the data, another difficulty that I faced
was the various formats of data. Since the data were in many different formats,
some I never seen before and some that are hardly used in North America,
finding data conversion applications, making the conversion, and screening the
data for its usability took me considerable amount of time. After struggling with data for several
days, I gathered enough data to determine the susceptibility to landslide of
this particular region where disastrous landslides occur regularly every year
during the raining season.
