I have tried to use many other sets of data for other places around the world. However, those data sets did not work out well in IDRISI hence, I used the data set for Africa which is found in the S drive in the SIS lab. As well I used websites about the agriculture in Africa and websites about the plant arabica. Through these websites, I have found that the plant arabica needs many different elements for it to grow. The following files were used in the analysis of the best location.
elev - elevation of the lands in Africa
afprcann - mean annual precipitation
aftmpann - mean annual temperature
chemical - chemical deterioration of the soil
forest - lands that have been affected by deforestation
popdens - population density of Africa per square km
severity - severity of soil degradation
waterbodies (made from vector files that I converted to raster, includes the rivers and lakes of Africa)
agri - agricultural lands of Africa
windsev - severity of wind effects on the soil
I used these files because they help explain the different elements that are required for a company or investor to make decisions on where to grow the coffee trees in order to make a profit. Elevation, precipitation and temperature are very important because arabica will only grow in certain conditions. As well, the soils that are used to grow the trees are also important since the soil must contain nutrients and not be drained of nutrients because of deforestation or soaked with chemicals. Hence the analysis of these files will prove to be useful in determining the best location for the trees.
