Data Collection:

In total there were four major data sets used in this analysis. From these data sets multiple subsets were created and used. Below is a summary of each data set and a description of how it was utilized in this project.

GVRD (Metro Vancouver) Land Use (RASTER) Data Set:

  • Location: Acquired from the Data Warehouse (S:\ Drive) in the SIS Lab
  • Projection: NAD 1983 UTM Zone 10N
  • Type:
    • Format: IDRISI Raster A.1
    • Data Type: Integer
    • File Type: Binary
  • Description: This data set is a raster layer containing generalized landuse for all the entire GVRD region
  • Use: This data set was used primarily to identify and isolate specific types of land use. In this analysis it was used to create a layer representing commercial landuse and a layer representing all green spaces and open and undeveloped spaces. This data set was also used as a frame on which to base all derived data sets created in the analysis process

GVRD (Metro Vancouver) Land Use (VECTOR) Data Set:

  • Location: Acquired from the Data Warehouse (S:\ Drive) in the SIS Lab
  • Projection: NAD 1983 UTM Zone 10N
  • Type: ESRI Shapefile
  • Description: A vector based representation of GVRD landuse (exact vector copy of the raster data set)
  • Use: This data set was primarily used as a clipping mask for geoprocessing the various vector data sets in ArcGIS. It was also used in the final output to assist in visualization

DMTI data set:

  • Location: Acquired from the Data Warehouse (S:\ Drive) in the SIS Lab
  • Projection: NAD 1983 UTM Zone 10N (reprojected)
  • Type: ESRI Shapefile
  • Description: This data set is a combination of point, line, and polygon data representing everything from municipal boundaries, to roads, to major points of interest
  • Use: This data set provided our analysis with 4 different data sets:
    • Major Roads
      • This data set was used directly in the analysis and was clipped by the GVRD landuse layer to create a layer of major roads in the GVRD
    • Highways
      • This layer was used in the final layout to give a sense of location to the audience when reading the map
    • Railways
      • This layer was also used directly in the analysis.
      • It was clipped by the GVRD landuse layer and all the dead rail lines were removed
    • Municipalities
      • This layer was also clipped to the GVRD landuse layer and was used as a visual aid in the final output

Statistics Canada Dissemination Areas:

  • Location: Simon Fraser University Research Data Library (RDL) ftp server
  • Projection: NAD 1983 UTM Zone 10N (reprojected)
  • Type: ESRI Shapefile
  • Description: This data set was comprised of polygon representations of all the Statistics Canada DA boundaries
  • Use: In this project they were simply used for the final output, however, in future research, SES data will be applied to this model calling for greater use of this data set
