Conceptual Outline

The concept behind this GIS project came to me one day when my Uncle, who was always eager to get into running his own retail business, openly chatted about his newest idea on the subject matter. He was thinking about opening a youth oriented teahouse somewhere in the Lower Mainland.Since teahouse was one of the popular hangout places for youth in Asia, and with a significant Chinese Community in the Greater Vancouver Region, my Uncle reasoned that the market of Asian style teahouses will provide good investment returns.

I was no economist or a business consultant, so I could not  help my Uncle on professional marketing research. What I could do is to help him to pinpoint some regions in Greater Vancouver that may be more suitable for him to locate his teahouse. This also serveed to be a inspiration for my GIS project...

To begin my project, I  first set aside a set of criteria for evaluating the most suitable regions in Greater Vancouver for my Uncle's Business:

          A. a high concentration of Chinese Population, likely to be at least 25% out of the total population
               based on ethnicity
          B. a high concentration of youth between the age of 15-24

This two were the most important criteria to be examined, since they are the targeted population      for my Uncle's Business. But not to be left behind, the followings were also crucial criteria to be evaluated as well:

            C. a high percentage of never married children, age 18-24
            D. Average Income of the region to be at least $30,000 annually
            E. a significant percentage of part time workers in the region

A high concentration of never married children between the age of 18-24 in a region was a good       indicator for my Uncle's Business; logically speaking population of this group who remain at home were more likely to have extra disposal income to spare, especially among the Chinese community.

Likewise, the combined criteria of high concentration of youth age 15-24, average regional income over $30,000, and a significant percentage of part time workers in the region should serve to single out medium to high income regions that also had a significant concentration of youth, who hopefully were also part time workers as indicated by the percentage of part time workers criteria.
