News and Updates
Thanks to everyone for a great conference. We hope to see you all next year when the University of Washington will be hosting.
MISSION STATEMENT
This year’s Fourth Annual Graduate Student Conference will provide a forum for students to share and learn about interdisciplinary approaches to the research and management of marine and coastal ecosystems.
Aquatic ecosystems are increasingly affected by humans. Fisheries collapses are one of the most visible symptoms of these impacts. Stresses include overexploitation, pollutants, and alteration of marine and freshwater habitats. Biological impacts extend beyond species of commercial interest to larger ecosystems. Economic and social impacts extend from local communities to global markets. However, scientific understanding of ecosystem processes and anthropogenic influences are often incomplete. It remains challenging to translate available science into sound management practices and sustainable fisheries. FAME 2007 will focus on whether science can better inform management of human impacts on aquatic environments. Can potential solutions be found and robust ecosystems be maintained?
Since 2004, the FAME conference has been a unique opportunity for graduate students to explore interdisciplinary issues regarding the interface between science and management of marine resources. Specifically, the conference is an opportunity for graduate students to meet colleagues with similar interests, discuss the current state of fisheries science and management, and explore different ideas about the future of our field.
The conference is hosted on a rotating basis by student caucuses at Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia, and the University of Washington. Although the majority of participants hale from these three sponsoring schools, the conference has gained a much wider continental following in recent years, with students from Nova Scotia, Manitoba, California, Michigan, Florida and North Carolina attending in past years.
Logistics
The conference will take place April 13-15 at Camp Elphinstone near Gibsons, B.C. We anticipate hosting approximately seventy graduate students from across Canada and the United States who will present their research and participate in breakout sessions.
You can find more specific information on logistics here.
Conference Format
The conference will take the format of oral and poster presentations followed by discussion sessions. We look forward to submissions from a broad range of fisheries and marine topics. Each graduate student participant will have the opportunity to present their research plans or findings through 15-minute presentations, with an additional 5 minutes for questions and discussion.
A poster session will be held the evening of April 14.
