Graduate students studying the science and management of freshwater and marine fisheries, from Canada, the U.S., and around the world.

Session Topics

(1)
Management tools for sustainable harvesting
What is a sustainable harvest and how might this be achieved?
(2)
Ecosystem-based management
What is ecosystem-based management? Is it a feasible alternative to single-species management?  How might this be achieved? How can we measure ecosystem integrity?
(3)
Recovery of depleted species
An increasing number of fish species have been designated as endangered or at-risk.  How can we manage for the recovery of these species?  What is a "healthy" recovery endpoint and how can we assess this?
(4)
Future directions in fisheries
How can new fisheries be managed to avoid population collapses inherent in traditional fisheries?  Have new management approaches been more successful than previous approaches?  What new monitoring tools might be used?  Given current downsizing of government budgets, how will we fund future research programs (e.g., through industry or recreational user fees?) and what incentives can we set to encourage research spending?
