COST & COMMITMENT

COST

There is NO cost to participate in this program for parents or students, other than the cost for parking in the SFU parking lot.

COMMITMENT

As always, parents have a very important role to play at SFU's Summer Reading Development program! We appreciate your commitment to the program and your willingness to bring your child to SFU each day for tutoring. We recognize that coming to SFU each day for three weeks can be difficult to manage in the summer; however, we appreciate your support of our SFU students as they strive to provide your child with an individualized, effective, and fun tutoring experience. Therefore, with the exception of health-related concerns, we ask that you only sign your child up if you know your child can attend all weekday sessions for the entire 3 weeks of the program.

We ask that children who are involved in this program, continue for the entire duration.

Our SFU tutors are awarded course credit for this program and if your son or daughter does not attend all scheduled times for tutoring, it will be difficult for the instructor to assess the SFU student's progress.

Once the registration process is complete, a research assistant will be contacting all families to discuss the program and to assess whether this program is a good fit for your child's needs.

We also ask that you attend a one-hour orientation meeting before the Summer Reading Development Program begins.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

ONLINE REGISTRATION

Our online registration opens at 8:00 a.m. (PST) on Saturday, April 15, 2023.

We typically receive two to three times as many applicants as we have slots available. To best meet the needs of children with the most significant challenges learning to read in our community, we will be asking a few questions as you register your child online. Your assistance in answering these questions will help us understand the challenges your child faces in their struggles to read and ensure the program is appropriate for them.

Note: All registrations must be completed online through our secure website. Computers are available at public libraries, and many schools will also allow parents to use computers for this purpose.

POST-REGISTRATION PROCESS

After completing the online registration, one of our program coordinators will call you (May/June) to:

  • confirm your interest and commitment to the summer reading program;
  • help us assess whether this program is a good fit for your child's needs;
  • confirm the requested time slot; and
  •  respond to any questions that you may have about the program.

A letter of confirmation of registration and a map of SFU will be mailed to you after this phone call.

CRECHE RESEARCH

Some researchers think that children who struggle with literacy tasks do so because they have difficulty sorting out what information to attend to and keeping this information in their working memory. Other children are distracted easily and cannot focus their attention on the task at hand. At the Center for Research in Early Childhood Health and Education, we study interventions that are thought to improve executive functions in children; we also conduct neuroimaging studies that show how children's brain function changes in response to our interventions.

Although participation in SFU research is not required for your child’s participation in the Summer Reading Program, we hope that you might consider participating in some of the exciting things that the Center for Research in Early Childhood Health and Education is currently engaged in. For more information on the research currently underway, please contact Dr. Maureen Hoskyn at mhoskyn@sfu.ca.
