SFU EDUC 804: Agenda for TappedIn Meeting (Nov. 9, 2005)
Big Idea Schedule Assignments Knowledge Forum

Tonight we'll be meeting in Tapped In, a synchronous on-line meeting place designed specifically for teacher professional development at SRI International.

When you log in

Please gather in Kevin's office. You can find it most easily by:

Don't forget to "detach" your chat window so you can make it really big. Do this by:

You can also use the "actions" menu to make the text in your chat window bigger or smaller.

If you have any technical problems you can reach me at (604) 291-3476.

Some Useful TappedIn Commands

Here are few useful commands for your reference. To use these, type them into the chat window.

/think <statement> Expresses your statement as a thought bubble (e.g. ". o O (statement)")

/me <action> Makes your character "perform" the specified action (e.g. if I enter "/me scratches his head" you see "KevinO scratches his head")

/msg <user> Opens a private chat with one specific user

Turn-taking in the Large-Group Discussions

When a number of people are together in one TappedIn room, it is possible for several people to "speak" at once and set up several conversational threads. Following multiple threads of conversation can become overwhelming. The problem becomes more severe as more people enter a room.

To cope with this problem, we will be using the "talking stick" method in our large-group discussions. Here is how it will work:

You may choose to use this protocol as well in your small-group discussions in the various break-out rooms (see schedule, below).

Schedule of Events

Since it is very difficult to follow synchronous chats with more than a few participants, we will be moving back and forth between small-group and whole-group chat throughout the evening. Here's a schedule. Please keep a watch or clock with you and shift between rooms as necessary using the appropriate "passageways". (A list of these is available in each room.)

  • Jake's office:
    • "Back in 1990 Harasim described many of the fundamental benefits and trade-offs associated with using computer conferencing in formal learning environments. Fifteen years later, have these changed? If so, how?"
