Declaring your program
Looking to major or minor in economics? Learn about our requirements and how you can declare your economics program.
Once you have met the requirements below, you can declare your economics program by contacting the undergraduate advisor at econ_advisor@sfu.ca.
If you are experiencing difficulty in fulfilling the requirements, please contact the advisor as they can help you with identifying any potential deficiencies in your course of study, and suggest a plan of action.
Major
There are three ways to declare your economics major. For all three options, you must first meet the following requirements:
To declare an econ major, students must have:
- 30 units completed
- SFU ECON GPA of 2.0 or above (based only on economics courses taken at SFU)
- ECON 201 completed
In addition, you must meet the requirements of one of the following three options:
Option 1
- CGPA of 2.3
- C- or higher in ECON 201
Option 2
- CGPA of 2.0
- B- or higher in ECON 201
Option 3
- CGPA of 2.0
- C- or higher in ECON 201
- C- or higher in 2 additional Lower Division ECON courses (excluding 113/115/103/105/220W)

Extended minor
Students may apply for entry into the economics extended minor program once the following requirements are met:
- 30 units completed
- ECON 201 with C- or better
- Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.0
- SFU ECON GPA of at least 2.0

Minor
Students may apply for entry into the economics minor program once the following requirements are met:
- 30 units completed
- ECON 103 and 105 with C- or higher
- Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of at least 2.0
- SFU ECON GPA of at least 2.0

To be approved by the Department of Economics as an honours or joint honours student, you must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0, and have completed the ECON required lower division courses with a grade of C- or higher.
If you are unsuccessful in your application, you may appeal the decision to the Undergraduate Chair, or re-apply the following semester.
