Can telementoring cultivate interest in your field? Many of our volunteers have been motivated by an interest in sharing what is exciting about their work. For example, one of our past telementors, a career scientist, was motivated to volunteer by his own boredom with high school science. As he explained: [Back then] I would just do my own thing, because getting into a discussion like this [with a mentor] just did not happen. There weren't people around that really could talk about it, so you just did your own thing, you didn't really explore your creativity. I think if you get a whole bunch of people that are really keen [together,it] validates your interest in science. In addition to promoting interest in students, mentors may find their interest in their own work rekindled. As many teachers know, sharing your interest in a subject can be the best way to revive that interest.
