Amanda Wallace

English as an Additional Language Consultant

Biography

As a language-acquisition specialist in CEE’s Curriculum & Instruction Division, I work with key stakeholders from across the university to identify, design, develop, and facilitate EAL support for Faculty, Instructors, and Teaching Assistants. This work includes institutional-level projects and initiatives for curriculum, program, course, and non-traditional learning activities. Before this role, I worked in SFU’s Centre for English Language Learning, Teaching and Research (CELLTR) as the liaison to the Faculty of Applied Science (FAS). In this position, I collaborated with colleagues in FAS to create and implement academic language and literacy development projects related to instructional design and multilingual student support. From 2016 to 2018, I was a Limited Term Lecturer in SFU’s Faculty of Education, teaching FALX99: Foundations of Academic Literacy.

Before coming to SFU in 2016, I was an assistant teaching professor in the College English Program at Seoul National University in South Korea. I have more than 15 years of experience teaching courses in academic writing, communication, and content-based English as a Second Language (ESL) and English for Specific Purposes (ESP). I have also facilitated professional development seminars and workshops for faculty and students in international contexts.

Apart from my professional work, I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Languages, Cultures and Literacies program in the Faculty of Education at SFU. My research focuses on the internationalization of higher education, multilingualism, academic language and literacy, and interdisciplinary collaboration between applied linguists and content faculty to support multilingual student success.
