Biography

It is with sadness that we report the passing of Dr. Michael Smith, Professor Emeritus of MBB. Mike joined SFU in 1976 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences where he served as Chair from 1995 to 1998. He was instrumental in founding the Institute of Molecular Biology, established in 1987, and served as the inaugural Chair of MBB when the Institute became a Department in 2000. He was required to retire in 2004 due to mandatory retirement and went on to teach for four years in Qatar.

Mike was a respected molecular biologist and instructor who had a profound influence on generations of scientists. Those of us who knew him will remember his passion and energy, his direct nature, his sense of humour and his kindness.
