Sessional - BISC 101 - General Biology - 1251 - Burnaby Campus

The following Sessional appointment is expected to be available in the Department of Biological Sciences during the SPRING SEMESTER  (December 30, 2024 to April 25, 2025).

BISC 101 GENERAL BIOLOGY - LECTURER (2/3 OF SEMESTER)
SALARY  $5,902.00 (inclusive of 4% vacation pay)
LECTURES T 10:30-11:20; R 9:30-11:20
Note: This position is for 2/3 of the semester, roughly weeks 1-4 and weeks 10-13 to be confirmed with faculty instructor teaching 1/3 of course

RESERVE SESSIONAL INSTRUCTOR POSITION: No

Article XIV E.3.a of the TSSU-SFU Collective Agreement allows for up to 25% of appointments within a given department to be reserved for graduate students or postdoctoral fellows. “While priority will be given to Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows in awarding this RESERVED position, all Sessional Instructors are encouraged to apply. In the event it is not filled by a Grad or Postdoc, it will be filled by another qualified applicant in accordance with Article XIV E of the Collective Agreement.”

Course Description: Introduction to the molecular, cellular and physiological mechanisms of living organisms (microorganisms, plants, animals). Lecture and lab topics include cell structure and function, flow of genetic information, enzyme function, metabolism, whole organism form and function (circulation, gas exchange, nutrition, osmoregularion). 

In addition to lectures, weekly responsibilities include Teaching Assistant (TA) training, and meeting with students. The sessional instructor is also responsible for giving exams and grading of the course with the help of the TAs.

Minimum Qualifications: A master’s degree or equivalent qualification in Biology or a related discipline, with a broad training in the biological sciences. Expertise in cellular/molecular biology and animal physiology, and recent relevant teaching at the post-secondary level.

Recommended Qualifications: A master’s degree or equivalent qualification in Biology or related discipline, with a concentration in cellular/molecular biology or physiology. Expertise in cellular/molecular biology and animal physiology, recent relevant teaching experience, and a minimum of 4 months’ teaching experience in introductory biology courses at the post-secondary level.
