Stamping
Stamping is a secondary form of applying ornamentation. There are two types of stamping that can be used. One a direct stamping of a vessel the other involves the attachment of stamped clay to the vessel. The decoration below may have been formed using a stamping technique.
Stamp Formation
The formation of the actual stamp is with the use of a mold so they may be mass produced. This makes the similar decoration of many different vessel possible to produce.
Stamping Techniques
Direct stamping involved the placement of a stamp against the outside of the pot while the clay forming the side was still soft. The stamp was then removed from the vessel wall and the impression was left behind.
Stamp attachment involved the pressing of moist clay into a stamp and then pressing the latter against the outside of the vessel. The clay inside the stamp sticks to the vessel and remains attached to it when the stamp is taken away. This method makes it unnecessary to reach inside the vessel and so can be done at a late stage in the manufacturing process.
