Archaeology

Latin America covers everything from Mexico to Central America, to the tip of Argentina. The story begins as far back as 10 000 to 30 000 years ago. By three thousand years ago things really get interesting. In southern Mexico the Maya civilization built enormous temples that rival the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt. Huge cities, such as Palenque, were populated by thousands of people and their lords, who presided over them as gods. The Zapotecs along the Pacific Coast created monster cities, like Monte Alban, and buried their rulers in stone chambers under the ground protected by deities such as Tlaloc the rain god. The South America Andes became home to amazing cultures 3000 years ago. The high altitude city of Tiwanaku dominated the Bolivian landscape 2000 years ago. By the time Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World the Incan Empire was at its height. The huge Incan armies controlled nearly all of Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador, as well as parts of Chile and Argentina!
